Which Metal Is Right for You?

Metal Hardness Weight Resizable Best for
Tungsten carbide Very high Heavy No — exchanged instead Anyone hard on their hands who wants a permanent shine
Titanium Medium Very light Limited First-time ring wearers, metal sensitivities, active jobs
Tantalum Medium-high Heavy Limited A dark metal that will never need re-plating
Ceramic High Light No — exchanged instead Deep black or bright white with no coating to wear off
Cobalt chrome High Medium Limited The look of platinum at a fraction of the price
14K gold Medium Heavy Yes Tradition, resale value, and rings you may pass down

Straight talk: tungsten and ceramic can't be sized — if your finger changes, the ring is exchanged, not stretched. Gold and platinum can be sized for life. If your weight or job is likely to change over the next few years, that's worth factoring in before you buy.

Choosing a Width

2mm – 4mm

Slim and understated. Sits close to the finger and rarely catches on gloves or tools. A good match if you also wear a watch, or if you have slimmer fingers.

5mm – 6mm

The most-requested range and the safest choice if you're buying without him. Substantial enough to read as a wedding band, still easy to forget you're wearing.

7mm – 8mm

A bold, traditional men's band. Shows off inlays, milgrain, and hammered finishes far better than a narrow band does. Best on hands size 9 and up.

9mm – 10mm

Statement width. Worth trying on in person first — a 10mm band covers a lot of finger and feels very different from an 8mm.

Comfort fit vs. standard fit: comfort-fit bands are domed on the inside so the ring glides over the knuckle and sits on a smaller contact point. They feel roughly a half size larger than a flat, standard-fit band of the same marked size — which is exactly why we size in person rather than guessing.

Common Questions

How much should a men's wedding band cost?

Most of our customers land between $200 and $900. Tungsten, titanium and ceramic bands typically run $150–$500. A plain 14K gold comfort-fit band generally runs $700–$2,500 depending on width and karat, because gold is priced largely on how much metal is in the ring. Diamond and multi-metal designs go up from there.

Can a tungsten ring be cut off in an emergency?

Yes. Emergency rooms remove tungsten rings routinely — the ring is cracked with locking pliers rather than cut, and it comes off in seconds. Tungsten is hard but brittle, which is what makes this work. It is not more dangerous than a gold ring.

Can you engrave the inside of the band?

Yes, on most bands. Thorsten bands include an engraving option right on the product page — add your text at checkout, or leave it off entirely. For Benchmark and gold bands we engrave in store. Bring the ring back any time; engraving is not a one-shot decision.

What if the size is wrong?

Gold and platinum bands can be sized up or down by our bench. Tungsten, ceramic and most titanium bands cannot be sized — they're exchanged for the correct size instead. Come in and get measured properly and this almost never comes up.

How long does a special order take?

Benchmark bands are made to order and typically ship in about two to three weeks. If you're on a deadline, tell us the date — we will tell you honestly whether it can be made, and what we have in the case that can.

Do you carry matching women's bands?

Yes. Most Benchmark designs are made in narrower widths in the same metal and finish so the pair matches exactly. Ask us and we'll pull the companion band for you.
